South Hams Rectory

Full renovation of historic home for a family relocating to Devon.

This project involved the full internal refurbishment of a former rectory, set in a beautiful South Devon landscape. This marvellous property, made up of Georgian and Victorian elements, was reconfigured to work better for modern family life, having previously become tired and disjointed after many owners including operating as a hotel. We explored its fascinating history, identifying the best period features to retain and restore, and enhanced the points of interest, to work well for the family, their visiting friends and for sociable gatherings.

Rooms were reconfigured, requiring structural works, and layouts were adapted to enhance the connections to the gardens and the rolling landscape beyond. The materials palette was simplified to a muted mix of natural stone, original floorboards, and comfortable tones reflecting the landscape and character of the property.

Bark + Bay Architects were appointed for all project stages.
