Smurf House

Full house refurbishment to create a quirky, fun-filled holiday home near Salcombe.

Our client’s home, in a village outside Salcombe, previously suffered from an awkward layout and dark, uninviting rooms. Bark + Bay Architects were briefed to transform it into a spacious, light-filled, fun-filled, accessible, high-end holiday home. The house is a local landmark due to its bright blue exterior hence became “The Smurf House”.

The project involved a full internal reconfiguration of the existing house requiring major structural works, to create a step-free wheelchair-accessible ground floor and fabulous open living area leading to the garden. We relocated the house’s entrance and created a new triple-height entrance space with sweeping staircase, added rooflights to bring in natural light, created five bedrooms and four bathrooms, designed bespoke joinery throughout, redesigned the garden with entertaining spaces and a garden room. We even added a slide to connect the new upper floor roof terrace to the garden for maximum fun factor.

Our client has a popular Instagram account so wished for the new details and finishes to be particularly eye-catching. This project completed in 2022.
